All fears are unfounded and bearded dragons or ‘beardies’ as they are often called are perfect pets for children. They are docile, tame and will happily sit on your child’s lap without much fuss.
Puppies and kittens are much more high maintenance than beardies and may definitely cause more mess around the house from scratches on the furniture to overturned trash bins. Beardies will do none of that.
How about Cleaning after them?
Even cleaning up after a beardie is pretty easy. A small wet towel will do. Even a child will not mind cleaning it up. A dog, however, may leave a significant pile of steaming hot poo which will make your child shout for, “Mooooommmmy!”
Most parents worry that the child may neglect their pet and the job will become theirs. Well, if that happens, rest assured that cleaning a beardie’s vivarium is pretty easy and they do not need to be fed very often. In most cases, children grow so attached to their little dragon, you may even find them bringing it to the dinner table.
How much does it cost to Feed them?
These little creatures eat insects so the food is pretty inexpensive but the creepiness factor is high. The children’s moms are often more freaked out by the insects than the beardie which doesn’t seem so bad after all. Crickets and bugs escaping is another matter. So, it would be well-advised to store the live feed securely.
Facts that you want to consider:
There are many interesting facts about bearded dragons that are extremely unique. For example, unlike dogs and cats which are warm-blooded animals, a beardie is a cold-blooded reptile that needs to regulate its own temperature by basking in heat and then cooling down.
Such facts are highly unique and differ from the normal pet. These pets will also make great show-and-tell presentations in class provided the teacher doesn’t shriek.
The most important thing that you will have to do is setup a vivarium for the dragon. Its little lair has to be just right for it to be happy and healthy. The care and feeding is pretty straightforward once the vivarium has been set up.
Despite their fierce little appearance, these are friendly creatures and love attention. They may not be able to wag their tail like a dog but they do like being stroked and are energetic when young. Since they can live up to 10 or even 12 years, your child will have lots of time with their new pet.
It would be an excellent idea to get a book on bearded dragons for your child. There are many excellent guides available online. Many parents who do buy beardies for their children neglect to provide solid information about this unique creature. There is so much to learn and the fun facts about beardies will help the child truly understand why the beardie behaves the way it does.
They’ll also learn how to spot if their pet is unwell, what are the foods to avoid feeding, how to store and feed live insects, etc. Children are often filled with a sense of wonder and curiosity. Their appetite for knowledge is insatiable.
Do provide them the necessary literature so that keeping a beardie is a fun, educational and rewarding experience.
